Six Ghanaian peacekeeping soldiers injured in an accident at Saka, near Zebilla, in the Upper East Region have been airlifted to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for further medical treatment.
The soldiers were on escort duty to Bawku on Saturday, February 22, 2025, when their light-armoured vehicle suffered a mechanical failure. A tyre dislodged, causing the vehicle to lose control and somersault multiple times, leading to the death of one soldier and injuries to six others.
TV3’s Upper East Regional correspondent Castro Senyalah reports that the injured soldiers initially received treatment at a hospital in the region. However, on Sunday, February 23, 2025, they were transported to the Airforce Base in Tamale, from where they were airlifted to Accra for advanced medical care.
Before their transfer, Brigadier General Frank Tei Narty, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Northern Command, visited the injured soldiers at the hospital on behalf of the Military High Command. He assured them of the Ghana Armed Forces’ (GAF) full support, including covering all medical expenses.
Details of the Accident
The accident occurred at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, involving a GAF light-armoured vehicle (registration number 21GA39) traveling from Bolgatanga to Bawku. Security sources indicate that the vehicle lost control after one of its tyres dislodged, leading to multiple somersaults.
Personnel from the Zebilla District Police Command quickly responded to a distress call and assisted in evacuating the injured to the Zebilla District Hospital. Local residents of Saka also played a crucial role in rescuing the trapped soldiers from the wreckage.
This incident follows another military vehicle accident on October 16, 2024, at Bazua, when a vehicle traveling from Bawku to Bolgatanga crashed, resulting in the death of a soldier.
The Ghana Armed Forces continues to investigate the cause of these accidents while ensuring the safety and well-being of its personnel deployed in conflict-prone areas.
