The Minister-Designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has debunked claims that 6,000 Ghanaians are set to be deported from the United States.
Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Ablakwa clarified that official communication from U.S. authorities confirms only 156 Ghanaians face imminent deportation.
“Currently, the official communication the ministry has received from Washington is 156, not 6,200. These 156 are facing imminent deportation,” he stated.
He further revealed that 40 of these individuals have been identified for expedited removal, emphasizing the seriousness of U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
Since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested over 3,500 undocumented immigrants, with deportation flights already underway.
Ablakwa underscored the need for consular services and legal assistance to support the affected Ghanaians.
“Our missions abroad must extend consular services to these individuals. They are our compatriots, and we must be concerned about their welfare,” he asserted.
He also proposed the establishment of a consular fund to provide legal aid for Ghanaians facing deportation.
“We need to quickly populate that fund. I’m happy the Minister of Finance is here, and as we work on the 2025 budget, I will strongly advocate for its approval,” he added.
Ensuring Humane Treatment for Deportees
Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of affected citizens, assuring that Ghana would not abandon its nationals.
“If they have a legal case to remain in the U.S., we must support them. If they have to return, it must be done in a humane way that respects their rights,” he said.
The minister-designate’s remarks come amid heightened concerns over mass deportations under the Trump administration, highlighting Ghana’s diplomatic efforts to safeguard its citizens abroad.
