The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat for the first time.
Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, the NDC candidate, was declared the winner by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, after a closely contested race.
She garnered 50,967 votes, narrowly surpassing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Mike Oquaye Jr., who received 50,669 votes.
In an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on December 31, the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, confirmed the declaration of results for the Dome Kwabenya Constituency.
“Today, we are pleased to announce that the proceedings and collation at the Dome Kwabenya Constituency have come to a close. It has gone full circle, and we are convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that the outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed at the polls. Ours is not to make anybody president or MP. Ours is to ensure that our outcome and processes guarantee that the people’s choice is upheld,” she told the gathering at the EC new head office.
This victory marks a significant shift in a constituency traditionally dominated by the NPP. The seat was previously held by Sarah Adwoa Safo since 2012.
Akurugu’s win reflects a broader trend in the 2024 elections, where the NDC has made gains in constituencies previously considered NPP strongholds, including Adansi Asokwa and Sekondi.
