Shama District residents and motorists in the Western Region are pushing for the road from Shama-to-Shama Junction to be completed as soon as possible.
The stretch has been under construction for four years, leaving commuters frustrated over its poor condition.
The stalled works coupled with the poor state of the road have made traveling on the road a nightmare, prompting renewed calls for action to alleviate their plight.
The road’s poor state has triggered multiple demonstrations, including protests led by traditional leaders, demanding its reconstruction. Responding to public pressure, authorities began work on the road in 2020.
However, four years later, progress has stalled, leaving the project largely incomplete. A recent visit to the site revealed scattered construction materials, but visible work remains minimal.
Commercial drivers who rely on the road for their livelihood lament the difficulties of navigating the stretch, citing increased vehicle damage and longer travel times.
While officials with the Shama District Assembly have promised to finish the project by year-end, many residents remain skeptical, demanding immediate and decisive action.
Isaac Amoo, Secretary of the GPRTU, expressed deep disappointment in the government’s handling of the road construction.
“In June this year the MP visited us and pledge to complete the road within three months, the said three months have elapsed and we are not seeing any significant progress on the road. If this project is not completed, we will advise ourselves” he threatened.
He warned that if the project is not completed before election day, he would rally his drivers to vote against the government as a sign of their dissatisfaction.
