Bono Region: Kofiasua chief, residents vow to resist galamsey

Residents of Kofiasua community in Dormaa in the Bono region have vowed to resist any attempt to engage in illegal mining activities known as galamsey in their community. The chief and residents have expressed their commitment to protecting their land and environment from the harmful effects of illegal mining.

Galamsey, or illegal mining, has been a major issue in many communities across Ghana, causing extensive damage to the environment and threatening the livelihoods of local residents.

In Kofiasua, however, the chief and residents have shown a united front against galamsey and are determined to protect their community from its destructive effects. Their commitment to preserving their land and water resources serves as a strong example for others to follow in the fight against illegal mining.

The chief of Kofiasua who is also the twafohene of Dormaa Traditional Council, Barima Twumasi Bekoe II, he has reiterated his strong stance against illegal mining in the community, noting that they will not allow any individual or group to destroy their land and water bodies.

Speaking to 3NEWS’ Claude Kumi Abisa, after a clean up exercise over the on Sunday, September 29 2024, Barima Twumasi Bekoe emphasized the importance of preserving the natural resources of the community for future generations.

He stated that the community will stand united in protecting their environment and will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone engaging in illegal mining. “I promise you so far as I am concern, in Kofiasua here no body can do galamsey, if you dare to do that you will have your ass jailed.”

However, he entreats his fellow chiefs especially those in the affected areas to immediately put a stop to the activities in order to maintain their dignity.

” If I hear of a chief or chief’s town being used as galamsey I bet to differ is very wrong, so my advice to my fellow chiefs who have been endulging in that should stop immediately. If they want to maintain their dignity in the traditional councils they have to defray from that illegal activities.”

The residents of Kofiasua have also expressed their support for the chief’s stance and have vowed to be vigilant in monitoring any suspicious activities in the community.
They have urged the authorities to take swift action against those involved in illegal mining and called for strict enforcement of laws to protect the environment.

The residents have however made it clear that they will not allow illegal mining to take place in their community. With the support of their chief and a united determination, they are ready to resist any attempts to destroy their environment. Their stance against galamsey sets a strong example for others in the ongoing battle to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
