Elections : John Dramani Mahama, ‘The Promise of Sustainable Democracy’ In Ghana

John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana from 2012 to 2017, has marked his term in office with a number of reforms and initiatives that have strengthened democracy in the country. Now the undisputed leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he has distinguished himself as a charismatic leader committed to promoting fundamental freedoms and good governance.

As he runs for the presidential elections on December 7, 2024, a question arises: ‘what contribution has he made to democracy during his first term, and what more can he offer?’

– Strengthening freedom of expression and respect for institutions –

During his tenure, Mahama strengthened press and media freedom, ensuring that Ghana’s media landscape remained open and vibrant. By promoting access to information and ensuring that citizens could freely express their opinions, the former president helped to create a more inclusive political culture.

In addition, his government oversaw credible and transparent elections, despite the electoral defeat in 2016. By peacefully accepting the results and facilitating a smooth democratic transition to the government of Nana Akufo-Addo, Mahama demonstrated a deep respect for Ghana’s democratic institutions.

– Mahama’s promises to raise the bar for democracy in Ghana –

Since the election of Akufo-Addo, Ghana has continued to make progress on the road to democracy, but some critics point to weaknesses in his management. Issues of corruption, concerns over transparency in infrastructure projects and social tensions due to rising inequality are challenges that have emerged under the current administration.

Mahama, through his campaign for this year’s elections, has criticised the current administration for its economic management and lack of commitment to effectively tackle corruption. In response, the leader of the NDC is proposing a program based on social justice and increased accountability of leaders. He highlights his experience and track record in governance and presents himself as the alternative to restoring integrity and confidence in public institutions.

– Major structural reforms to come under Mahama –

If Mahama is re-elected on December 7, 2024, he plans to implement significant reforms to strengthen Ghanaian democracy. He envisages deep institutional reforms aimed at guaranteeing the independence of regulatory bodies such as the Human Rights Commission and the Electoral Commission, so that they operate without political interference.

The Ghanaian former head of state also promises to strengthen public freedoms, in particular, by modernizing the digital space and protecting journalists against all forms of violence and intimidation. The fight against corruption will be at the heart of his program, with the creation of an independent office dedicated to fraud in public procurement.

Finally, Mahama advocates a national dialogue to resolve ethnic and political conflicts, promoting reconciliation and peace between the different communities in Ghana.

Mahama has left a positive legacy for democracy in Ghana, marked by his respect for civil liberties and his key role in peaceful transitions of power. By standing for re-election, he promises to build on these achievements and introduce ambitious reforms to improve transparency, governance and social inclusion.

Faced with the current administration of President Akufo-Addo, the NDC leader, John Dramani Mahama is positioning himself as a credible alternative to rejuvinate Ghana’s democracy and restore public confidence towards leaders.

Mahama has played a key role in improving the country’s infrastructure, in particular, electricity and transport, which has had a positive impact on the political and economic life of Ghanaians.
