2024-25 Division One League: Traditional clubs eye top-flight return

The 2024-25 Division One League commences this weekend with a host of traditional clubs eyeing a return to the top-flight.

With the new season beckoning, 3Sports delves into how traditional clubs who have deep-rooted heritages in the league will look to crawl their way into the upper echelon of Ghana football.

Accra Great Olympics

Great Olympics were a dominant force in the 1970’s, clinching two league titles but found themselves as perennial relegation battlers in recent times.

The Accra-based side garnered 44 points last season and were the bogey side for most of the big guns.

They face a daunting task of overcoming strong oppositions in Okwahu United and Inter Allies in the Division One Zone three.

Okwahu United

The club is synonymous with producing legendary names in Ghana football such as Tony Yeboah, Mohammed Gargo, C.K Akonnor, amongst others.

Okwahu, who will battle it out in Division one Zone three, will be eager to rub shoulders with the big boys after almost two decades in Ghana’s lower tiers.

Ebusua Dwarfs

Relegated in cruel fashion on the final day of the 2020-21 season, Dwarfs finished level on points (41) with King Faisal and Elmina Sharks but went down due to head-to-head advantage.

Amongst the founding members of the league, Dwarfs – who had the legendary Robert Mensah in post from 1957-1962 – will be itching to survive Zone two’s tests to return to the league.

King Faisal went down in the 2022-23 season after four seasons in the top-flight.

Squaring off against Dwarfs, New Edubiase, and Elmina Sharks in Zone two, the Kumasi-based club will fancy their chances of making a Premier League return.

 

New Edubiase

Since being booted out to the Division One eight years ago, New Edubiase have fought valiantly to stake a claim to be amongst Ghana’s elites.

Two points separated them and promotion as they narrowly missed out last term after Basake Holy Stars out-foxed them in Zone Two.

With Holy Stars no more, New Edubiase will hope to make the most of their chances this time around.

Sekondi Eleven Wise

With all the club’s rich history, Eleven Wise have struggled in the last two decades, going down from the Premier League 14 years ago.

Wise are on an upward trajectory after securing promotion from the Division Two league ahead of the upcoming season and will hope to ride on that confidence to break into the Premier League.
