The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Savannah Region has formally petitioned both the Overlord of Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I and the Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muazu Jibril over the politicization of recently deployed DRIP equipment.
At a press conference in Damongo, Savannah Regional Executives of the opposition NDC expressed concerns regarding the branding of the equipment with New Patriotic Party (NPP) colors, which they claim undermines the non-partisan nature of development projects meant to benefit all communities, irrespective of political affiliation.
“We are by this press conference giving the NPP a three-day ultimatum to remove all party posters and political branding from the equipment. Failure to do so, will result in NDC members taking decisive action, including the suspension of the equipment’s operations.”
“We are not against the use of the equipment for the benefit of the people. However, we strongly condemn the attempt to politicize what is meant to be a resource for all”
The NDC argues that such politicization creates division in the community, as beneficiaries of the equipment may feel excluded if it is branded with the logo and imagery of a particular political party.
There was uneasy calm in the Salaga South Constituency on Thursday as supporters of the NDC and NPP clashed following the arrival of the DRIP equipment
Scores of supporters were injured in the process.
Meanwhile, paramount chief of the Kpembe traditional area, Kpembewura Banbagne Ndefeso, has slapped a GHC5,000 fine plus a bull each on each of the two political parties over Thursday evening’s clash following the arrival of the DRIP equipment.
