President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cautioned all political parties to desist from declaring election results ahead of the Electoral Commission (EC).
He says the EC is the only constitutionally mandated body to announce election results that reflect the will of the people.
Speaking during the Bar Conference Conference in Kumasi on Monday September 9, he said “The EC has the role of the to declare election results, political parties must refrain from declaring election results.”
Meanwhile, Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC) Jena Adukwei Mensa has assured that the process for the conduct of the general elections will be peaceful, transparent, and fair.
The Electoral Commission has formed a team of experts to assess the presidential nomination forms presented by the aspirants to ascertain whether they meet standards.
Chair of the Commission, Madam Jean Adukwei Mensa stated that the aspirants have been given five days to file their forms starting today Monday, September 9.
The five-day period for filing is a deviation from the previous status quo when the aspirants were given two days to do so.
This is to enable them to correct wherever errors that may be detected on their forms, Madam Mensa said when she received the forms of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
After receiving the forms, she said “We have no doubt that the process will be transparent, fair, and peaceful.”
She added, “Indeed this is the first time a sitting Vice President has personally presented his nomination forms to the EC.”
Dr Bawumia for his part said the filing of forms was historic to him.
“For me, it is a very historic opportunity to submit these forms for the first time as a presidential candidate. I want to pray for God’s blessings for our dear country Ghana,” he said after filing.
Dr Bawumia was accompanied by his Running Mate and Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Party’s National Chairman Stephen Ntim and General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, and some other leaders of the NPP.
Adukwei Mensa assured that the process of filing and auditing the presidential nomination forms presented by the aspirants will be fair and transparent.
