VR: Youth in Gbi communities demand justice for slain colleagues

Residents of Gbi Wegbe, Avega and Godonu in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region have taken to the streets to demand justice for last year’s shooting and killing of two young men, David Agbebianu and Afeti Agbeko in the Gbi community by Hohoe Police.

In this regard, the residents are passionately appealing to the IGP to as a matter of importance, expedite action to compensate families of the two persons who met their untimely death following the shooting which occurred in August last year.

The youth after embarking on a solemn march through the streets of Gbi township later converged at a common ground and held a press conference on the issue as part of activities to mark the one-year remembrance of the two departed souls.

It would be recalled that TV3 reported last year, that some police officers from the Hohoe Police Command chased one Tsetse Enyonam who is now late from Gbi-Avega towards Godonu and knocked him down and in the process the police vehicle veered off the road, summersaulted into a gutter and caught fire.

Following this incident, the police who chased the motor rider called for reinforcement, and they attacked the community.

The police according to the press statement went on rampage, tortured these unfortunate civilians, looted shops, burnt about 45 motor bikes belonging to the young men in town and then shot and killed David Agbebianu and Afeti Agbeko as several of these innocent civilians in the community were maimed.

One year down the line, the spokesperson for the youth, Andy Emilson Agbi said nothing has since been heard from the police as the bodies of the dead are still in the mortuary and duty bearers remain tight-lipped.

The police administration he noted failed to communicate with the chiefs and elders on their investigations and findings into the misconduct of the police which does not augur well for peace to prevail between they and the police.

Emilson Agbi who is also an Assembly member for Gbi Wegbe noted that it’s crucial for the police administration to come-up with plans towards the burial of the dead and compensate the children and wives of the deceased who are still traumatized and suffering from such bizarre incident.

The spokesperson in the statement therefore called on the IGP to ensure that after their findings, perpetrators should be made to face the full rigors of the laws to serve as a deterrent to others.

He said it’s unfortunate that duty bearers have since failed to act appropriately as the dead persons’s wives and children are in an unbearable state, adding that the police on that unfortunate day looted shops and several motor bikes burnt to ashes have not received anything.

Residents who were clad in red and black attire with red arm bands carried placards some of which read, “one year remembrance walk for justice,” “Justice for David and Afeti, police must stop shooting and killing innocent people,” “No justice no vote and police professionalism in shooting is questionable” among others.
