Some youth of the NPP in Okaikwei North constituency have rallied together to demand swift action against threats targeting the party’s parliamentary candidate for Okaikwei North and Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei.
Concerns have escalated amidst reports of intimidation and potential harm directed towards Ama Dokua, prompting an urgent call for intervention.
At a press conference yesterday to demand action on the incident, leaders of the NPP youth, namely Stephen Awuah-Pobi, Oppong Siaw and Portia Owusu Achiaw, voiced their apprehension over the safety of their candidate, emphasizing the need for concrete measures to safeguard her well-being.
According to the youth group, it is alleged that during the celebration of the Eid holiday on Thursday, April 14, 2024, a troubling incident unfolded in the Akweteyman Electoral Area of Okaikwei North, as Nana Ama Dokua faced threats of violence.
The accused, identified as Osman, also known as Libya, an assemblyman for the area and purported NDC youth organiser, allegedly confronted the Minister during her routine errands, issuing disturbing threats openly.
It was also alleged that Osman brazenly declared his intention to inflict harm upon the Minister, including the chilling threat of shoving pepper into her eyes.
Democratic values
The NPP youth group underscored the importance of upholding democratic values and ensuring the protection of individuals participating in the electoral process.
“…in light of the fact that a serving member of Parliament, Hon. Ekow Hayford of Mfanteman, was slain in 2020, we cannot take such threats for granted. As a law-abiding Minister, she decided to explore the rule of law to seek redress, especially when Osman’s intentions have been made known publicly,” they indicated.
The group described Nana Ama Dokua as a beacon of hope for the constituents of Okaikwei North, adding that she stands as a tireless advocate for progress and welfare within the community.
Acknowledging Nana Ama Dokua’s unwavering commitment to the constituency’s well-being, the group expressed dismay at the actions of the NDC youth organiser, lamenting the divisive impact such behaviour has on candidates and voters alike.
They emphasized that violence and intimidation have no place in Ghana’s political system, and urged the Ghana Police Service to pursue the matter rigorously and condemn such actions unequivocally.
“It is imperative,” they asserted, “that the tenets of courtesy, understanding and decency be upheld as the Ghana Police Service investigates this matter.”
