Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has set an ambitious goal for Ghana: achieving Olympic success at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
He revealed this during his manifesto launch ahead of the 2024 elections.
Despite Ghana’s rich potential in various sports, the nation has historically underperformed at the Olympics, securing only five medals, with just one medal earned during the 4th Republic at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
The NPP flagbearer has outlined comprehensive development plans that his future government intends to implement to change this trajectory and unlock Ghana’s vast sports potential. These plans include sustainable funding, targeted development programs, and a specific initiative aimed at Olympic success.
Dr. Bawumia announced the “Operation Olympics Glory” program at the NPP Manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday. “We will start an ‘Operation Olympics Glory’ programme by dedicating resources towards the preparation and readiness of athletes for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA,” he stated.
As part of this initiative, Dr Bawumia mentioned that his government would focus on specific sports where Ghana has the potential to win medals, ensuring that resources are directed where they are most needed.
In addition to the Olympic-focused program, Dr Bawumia also revealed plans to establish a Ghana School Sports Secretariat. This new body will be tasked with driving the sustainable development of grassroots sports through schools, working in collaboration with stakeholders like the Ghana Education Service and sports federations.
