Traditional leaders of Nkroful, hometown of Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah have forgiven New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh for a comment about their kinsman.
During the unveiling of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as running mate to Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia on Tuesday, July 9, the former Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, stated that President Akufo-Addo had performed better than Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in developing Ghana.
Body language and other choice of words used by NAPO sparked widespread public condemnation, compelling Dr. Prempeh to retract his words and apologize to Ghanaians.
The traditional leaders of Nkruful also added their voice to the public condemnation and equally demanded an apology from Dr Prempeh in person before he will be forgiven.
On 9th August 2024, the NPP’s running mate as part of his campaign tour to the Western Region, particularly in the Nzemaland, made a stop at Nkroful to personally apologise to the traditional leaders and the entire Nzemaland to forgive him for the unfortunate comments he made.
In his apology statement he said “I lived with Nzema people when I was growing up. Nzema people and I are one people. I will never disrespect Nkrumah in any way. anybody who attempts to disrespect Nkrumah will face the consequences of his actions.
“Nkrumah has done so much for the country. I was misconstrued, but I apologise to Ghanaians and I stand here before you to apologise for my comments again, forgive me, we’re all one people,” NAPO said.
In response, the Chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutua accepted the apology and urged him not to sin anymore.
“NAPO’s comments received wide condemnation from Ghanaians because it was uncalled for. We hail the actions of Ghanaians, we thank them. We need to recognise that Nkrumah did a great job for the country.
“We’re a peaceful people, we don’t like violence, and we don’t want a situation where chaos will erupt in Ghana because of the Nzema people.
We heard that NAPO apologised to Ghanaians for his comments. But he needed to come to Nzema to personally apologise to the traditional leaders and re-affirm his regrets.
“Today, he has asked for forgiveness from the chiefs, this is what we have all been waiting for, and so we accept his apology.”
The NPP’s running mate is the Western Region for campaign and also introduce himself to the people of the region ahead of the 2024 general elections.
