Breastfeeding protects babies against infections, others – Midwife

World Breastfeeding Week is being observed across the globe.

This is an annual event which is marked from 1st to 7th August every year. It is aimed at educating parents on proper way of breastfeeding.

Constance Odonkor is Principal Midwifery Officer at Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital in Greater Accra Region. She said, “this program is to sensitise the entire public to support and promote breastfeeding”.

“We realized that breastfeeding has a lot of importance, and a lot of women are not going by diet requirement so unfortunately, our newborn babies will not get the right nutrients for them to have optimal growth,” she added.

According to Madam Odonkor, “breastfeeding protects babies against infection, apart from that babies who are breastfed makes them brilliant, according to research. Also, with the mother, breast-feeding protects them from breast cancer and as well babies who are breastfed fortunately do not have diarrhea”.

“Parents should adopt best practices as well as to encourage exclusive breastfeeding at early stages of their babies and can add nutritious food after six months,” she advised.

This year’s theme for the breastfeeding week is “Closing the gap: Breastfeeding Support for all”.
