Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, Patricia Appiagyei has indicated the Children, Gender and Social Protection Ministry would have to set up a Gender Equity Committee to oversee the implementation of the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill 2024 which was passed by Parliament on Tuesday, July 30.
The Affirmative Action Bill is to create an equitable society as well as address the socio-cultural, political, economic, and educational imbalances and it is expected to be implemented in both public and private sectors.
Deputy Majority Leader and Chairperson of the Gender and Social Protection Committee in Parliament Patricia Appiagyei says ‘’we are looking at the Trades Unions, we are looking at the political parties and then we are also looking at the private sector how we can lieu them gradually to ensure that in their recruitment, in their employment they would wear the lens to address the gap, the wide gap that we are seeing.’’
The Asokwa MP called for sensitization of the bill by the Gender Ministry and other stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation.
According to the deputy majority leader, when the bill comes into effect, employers including government organisations and the security services would be obliged to include women in their recruitment. So, for instance if a company is recruiting five people for employment ‘’at least two should be women’’.
Parliament is yet to transmit the bill to the presidency for presidential assent for it to become law and Patricia Appiagyei assured the public that the president would be pleased to sign it. ‘’There is a difference between a private member’s bill and a bill sponsored by the government, it is in his (president) interest and it gives him much pride to assent to that bill’’.
