The Deputy Chief Executive in-charge of road maintenance at Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) Mr. Lawrence L. Lamptey has called on experts in road maintenance sector to come-up with innovative ideas in ensuring smooth maintenance of road networks in the country.
Mr Lamptey said effective road maintenance is crucial for safety on the roads of the country, and ultimately, it would promote the desired maximum lifespan of roads which he observed was important in the country’s development drive.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer who made the call at the opening of a five-day national annual refresher course for road maintenance engineers in the country at the Volta Regional capital Ho, said good road networks would certainly enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of the people, therefore road maintenance engineers should put in the maximum efforts to come up with sustainable ideas to improve on the road maintenance system of the country.
The refresher course, which attracted over 50 participants across the country was themed: “Data-Driven Decision Making for Road Maintenance and Improvement Process”, afforded the participants the needed platform to share ideas and put their expertise to bear on the course ensuring that best practices is at play in harnessing data analysis to ensuring perfect road maintenance.
Mr Lamptey urged road maintenance engineers to take advantage of these routine annual refresher courses to update themselves with the needed knowledge that would enable them improve on their work, adding that it would help them to make an informed data-driven decision which is scientifically based to shape the future of road maintenance in the country.
He urged the maintenance engineers to work with a common purpose to help pave the way for safer, more efficient and sustainable transportation road infrastructure in the country.
A Resource Person, Mr Mark Okyere who spoke with 3news noted that regular road maintenance would extend the lifespan of the road network and therefore asked the road maintenance engineers to be innovative in the discharge of their routine road maintenance work.
Mr Okyere identified overloading as a major factor contributing to the deterioration of the country’s road networks and cautioned drivers to avoid overloading particularly those driving heavy vehicles.
The Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa advised the engineers to take advantage of the refresher course to update themselves adequately for the task ahead, particularly in this modern technological regime of road maintenance.
The engineers were taken through such topics as Data Collection and Management, Condition Assessment and Performance Metrics, Asset Management and Optimisation, case studies and success stories.
