Team Ghana made a striking impression at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Friday, donning traditional Ghanaian smocks (fugu) to showcase the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
The decision to wear the vibrant and colorful attire was aimed at promoting Ghanaian culture on the global stage. Media attaché Benjamin Willie Graham explained, “We are going to wear our traditional fugu and a black down as well as special footwear.”
The ceremony, a first-of-its-kind to be held on the Seine River, saw athletes from around the world parading in boats. Ghana’s contingent, led by flagbearer Joseph Paul Amoah, participated in the unique procession.
