Former Juventus and AC Milan star Roberto Baggio was injured during an armed robbery at his home in northern Italy.
Baggio, 57, was taken to an emergency room in Arzignano and received stitches to his forehead after being struck with a gun by one of the burglars.
In his first public statement following the incident, Baggio expressed gratitude to his well-wishers and said, “Now all that remains is to overcome the fear.” He added, “Fortunately the violence I suffered only caused a few stitches on my person, bruises, and a lot of fear.”
The robbery occurred while Baggio and his family were watching Italy play Spain in the European Championships.
The ordeal reportedly lasted about 40 minutes, during which Baggio attempted to stop the intruders but was overpowered and hit on the forehead.
He and his family were then locked in a room while the burglars ransacked the house. It remains unclear how much was stolen.
Veneto region president Luca Zaia condemned the attack, calling Baggio the “symbolic champion of our football and our region.” He expressed hopes for Baggio’s swift recovery and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
After the robbers left, Baggio managed to break down the door of the room they were locked in and called the police. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
Baggio led Italy to the World Cup final in 1994, though he famously missed the decisive penalty in the shootout against Brazil.
He retired in 2004 and remains the only Italian to score in three World Cups, sharing the record for Italy’s top World Cup scorer.
