The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN), Ghana Chapter, has strongly condemned the brutal assault of a woman captured in a viral video, describing the act as a stark reminder of the increasing dangers faced by women and girls, even within their own homes.
The incident is particularly alarming as it follows the recent Akyempim tragedy, where a man allegedly killed his wife and six children by setting their home ablaze.
In a statement signed by its Chairperson, Dr Charity Binka, and shared with The Ghanaian Times, AWLN Ghana described the assault as “barbaric, dehumanising, and a direct violation of her dignity, rights, and bodily integrity,” emphasising that such acts offend the nation’s collective conscience.
The organisation stressed that these cases are not isolated, reflecting a deeply rooted culture of silence, impunity, and the normalisation of abuse in homes that should be places of protection rather than fear.
AWLN Ghana called on the Ghana Police Service to treat the matter with urgency, applying the full weight of the law instead of classifying it as a mere domestic dispute. It urged law enforcement agencies to prioritise domestic violence cases, ensure swift responses, protect victims, and hold offenders accountable.
The group also demanded the full implementation of the Whistleblower Act to encourage reporting of abuse, alongside intensified public education on the Domestic Violence Act and stronger community-level prevention efforts.
Additionally, AWLN Ghana stressed the urgent need for safe shelters, counselling, and support for women in abusive homes. The organisation appealed to community members not to dismiss domestic violence as “family business,” insisting that silence only fuels further abuse.
