A member of the Minerals Commission Board, Nana Adwoa Foriwaa II, has appealed to her colleague traditional leaders to advise their community members to stop attacking the National Anti-Galamsey Taskforce during operations.
According to her, the military personnel involved in the taskforce “are our brothers and sisters” and, therefore, must not be targeted with guns and other offensive weapons.
Nana Adwoa Foriwaa, also the Queen Mother of Nsuta Fawoman in the Ashanti Region, made the appeal during the launch of a health and education foundation established at Dunkwa-on-Offin, in the Central region, by the Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira East, Mrs Emelia Ankomah.
She emphasised that the taskforce was working on a government mandate to end the galamsey menace, which continued to harm the environment and threatened national development.
Everyone should, therefore, endeavour to rid the country of the canker destroying the environment.
The District Chief Executive for Upper Denkyira East, Mr George Anane Coleman, also stressed the need for strong collaboration between traditional leaders and MMDCEs in the fight against galamsey, noting that some of the reports emerging from the district were alarming.
Mrs Emelia Ankomah, for her part, encouraged the public to support the new foundation, adding that illegal mining activities had caused extensive damage to property and natural resources.
She highlighted the foundation’s openness to all residents of Upper Denkyira East to support children’s education and the health of the people.
A Central Regional Council of State member, Mr Hakim Adei, further urged parents to invest in their children’s future.
He noted that galamsey had destroyed large tracts of land and water bodies, stressing that it was time the youth learnt skills such as dressmaking, makeup artistry, and other trades to secure sustainable livelihoods.
