The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed deep concern over a road accident involving a team of journalists who were covering illegal mining activities in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
In a statement issued on Friday, November 7, 2025, and signed by the Regional Chairman, Kofi Adu Domfeh, the Association conveyed solidarity and sympathy to the affected journalists, their families, and their media organizations.
“We stand in full solidarity with our affected colleagues in this difficult moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, their families, and their media organizations,” the statement read.
The GJA emphasized that the safety and welfare of journalists remain paramount, describing the incident as a stark reminder of the risks reporters face while pursuing stories of national interest, particularly on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The Association said it is working closely with relevant authorities and partners to ensure that the affected journalists receive the necessary medical treatment and emotional support.
Mr. Domfeh also called on institutions and agencies that engage the media in field operations—especially in high-risk zones—to prioritize safety protocols and ensure proper coordination and preparedness before embarking on such assignments.
“As journalists continue to play their watchdog role in bringing national attention to environmental and social challenges, it is imperative that their safety be given topmost priority,” the statement added.
The Ashanti GJA reaffirmed its commitment to stand by its members and provide support as they recover from the incident.
