Morocco has rejected the resignation of head coach Walid Regragui following the national team’s defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations final, according to reports.
Regragui had offered to step down after Morocco lost 1-0 to Senegal after extra time in the AFCON final, with the match ending goalless after regulation time. Reports from Foot Mercato indicate that the coach believed his future depended on the team’s performance at the tournament and subsequently submitted his resignation to the Moroccan Football Federation.
Despite the move, the Moroccan FA have reportedly refused to accept his decision, opting instead to maintain stability with less than six months remaining before the FIFA World Cup. The Federation is understood to value continuity, especially given Regragui’s recent achievements with the team.
Appointed in 2022, Regragui guided Morocco to a historic semi-final finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, becoming the first African nation to reach that stage. He also led the Atlas Lions to their first Africa Cup of Nations final in several years, further strengthening his standing.
