South Korea captain Son Heung-min has expressed deep admiration and gratitude toward Ghana coach Otto Addo ahead of Tuesday’s international friendly, but the former Tottenham star insists sentiment will not influence his hunger to win.
Son and Addo share a long-standing bond dating back to their days at Hamburg, where Addo served as a mentor during Son’s early development in Europe.
The Ghanaian tactician played a key role in guiding the young forward as he adapted to life in the Bundesliga.
Reflecting on their relationship, Son spoke with warmth and respect.
“He helped me a lot when I first moved to Germany, offering advice that shaped my development,” Son said.
“I was very young, and he supported me in many ways that helped me grow.”
However, with both nations preparing to close out their international calendar for the year, the Korean skipper made it clear that friendship will take a back seat once the whistle blows.
“Coach Addo will be fighting to win, and so will I,” Son stated firmly. “That’s football. In this competitive world, there’s no room for sentiment on the pitch. The only thing that matters now is victory.”
The reunion adds an intriguing subplot to a fixture already filled with anticipation.
Korea, eager to finish the year strongly, will look to build momentum ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, while Ghana aim to continue evaluating their squad under Addo’s guidance.
