KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has marked its 65th anniversary of operating in Ghana, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability, customer excellence and partnerships that continue to strengthen the aviation and economic landscape.
Founded in 1919, KLM is the world’s oldest airline still operating under its original name. The carrier began its Ghana operations on November 1, 1960, with the arrival of its first aircraft in Accra, and has since become a vital bridge linking Ghana to Europe and the rest of the world.
Currently, the airline operates daily flights between Amsterdam and Accra, departing Amsterdam at 14:35 and arriving in Accra at 20:05, before departing again at 22:05 to reach Amsterdam at 05:45 the following day, offering passengers seamless connectivity to over 160 destinations across Europe, North America, Asia and beyond.
Speaking at the 65th anniversary celebration in Accra, Ms. Isabelle Indeweij Gerlings, Country Manager of Air France–KLM Ghana, said the airline’s long-standing relationship with Ghana is rooted in partnership, innovation and shared progress.
“From our first flight in 1960 to today’s operations at Kotoka International Airport, KLM’s story in Ghana is one of continuous collaboration and mutual growth. We are deeply grateful for the loyalty of our customers, the dedication of our local team and the support of government and partners over the years,” she said.
Ms. Gerlings highlighted KLM’s ongoing investments in fleet modernisation, digital innovation and customer experience, adding that the airline continues to enhance its loyalty programmes, support services and travel flexibility to meet changing customer expectations.
She reaffirmed the airline’s mission to remain not just a transport provider but a strategic partner in Ghana’s journey toward sustainable growth.
KLM’s ongoing journey includes more sustainable aviation; working to reduce its climate impact by investing in more modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, exploring the use of biofuels and developing innovative solutions aimed at improving its environmental performance.
She also underscored KLM’s corporate social responsibility in Ghana, which includes supporting local talent development, green projects and women’s empowerment initiatives.
“We are proud to contribute to Ghana’s social and economic development. Looking ahead, we aim to deepen our engagement through new customer-centric services, expanded cargo operations and stronger partnerships with local stakeholders,” she said.
Mr. Joris Holtus, Air France–KLM Regional General Manager, reiterated the airline’s global and local sustainability commitments, noting that sustainability has become a central pillar of KLM’s operations.
“Sustainability is no longer a choice; it is an imperative. Through our Fly Responsibly initiative, we aim to reduce carbon emissions and continue investing in sustainable aviation fuels and greener airport operations across Africa,” he said.
He added that KLM’s Ghana team exemplifies the airline’s values of diversity, inclusion and professionalism, serving as ambassadors of the company’s global excellence and local warmth.
Representing the Minister for Transport, Mr. Eric Tetteh-Addison, Deputy Director of Policy and Planning, commended KLM for its enduring presence and impact on Ghana’s aviation and economic sectors.
“KLM’s dedication to providing exceptional air travel services has strengthened connectivity between Ghana and the Netherlands, fostering trade, tourism and investment. The airline’s commitment to safety, sustainability and innovation has raised the bar for excellence in Ghana’s aviation industry,” he said.
The event, attended by government officials, diplomats, business leaders and loyal customers, follows KLM’s 106th global anniversary, marking over a century of connecting people and economies worldwide.
