Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito says costly mistakes proved decisive in their 1-0 defeat to Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup second round at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Kotoko conceded in the 47th minute when Joseph Bakasu fired home from a corner kick, before goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was sent off two minutes later for handling the ball outside his penalty area. Despite showing resilience after going down to ten men, the Porcupine Warriors were unable to find a response.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, Zito admitted that individual errors disrupted his team’s rhythm but expressed optimism about the return leg in Morocco on Friday.
"This is the game of football; sometimes certain things happen beyond your control," he said. "I think along the line there were some mistakes that affected us. Anything can happen when we go there. We are not going as losers, but to play well and perform better than we did here."
Kotoko must now overturn the narrow deficit in Casablanca to progress to the group stage of the competition.
