The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Morocco will host the African playoff matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be staged across the United States, Mexico, and Canada and feature an expanded format of 48 teams for the first time in history.
Under the new qualification format, Africa’s 54 national teams have been drawn into nine groups of six, with the group winners qualifying automatically for the World Cup.
The four best runners-up across the groups will contest a playoff mini-tournament to determine who advances to the intercontinental playoff, where one more spot will be up for grabs.
According to CAF, the playoff semifinals will take place on November 13, 2025, followed by the final on November 16, 2025, with all matches to be played in Morocco.
The mini-tournament format will feature semifinals and a final, with the eventual winner moving on to face teams from other confederations, including Asia, South America, North America, and Oceania, for a place at the 2026 World Cup finals.
