Arsenal youngster Charles Sagoe Jr has declined an invitation to represent Liberia in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, opting instead to delay his decision on international allegiance â a move that has reignited Ghana’s interest in securing the talented winger for the Black Stars.
The 21-year-old, who qualifies to play for Liberia through his mother, was named in coach Mario MarinicÄ’s provisional squad for the fixtures against Namibia and Equatorial Guinea.
However, Sagoe Jr formally informed the Liberia Football Association that he was not yet ready to commit to the Lone Stars, insisting he needed more time to consider his international future.
Sources close to the player revealed that while Sagoe Jr appreciated the invitation, he remains cautious about taking a decision that could define his footballing path.
The Arsenal academy product is reportedly keen on evaluating all his options, aware of the implications for both his career trajectory and family heritage.
Born in London to Ghanaian and Liberian parents, Sagoe Jr is eligible to represent England, Ghana, or Liberia at senior level.
His Ghanaian roots have drawn growing attention from the Ghana Football Association, which has intensified its scouting of dual-national players across Europe as part of a broader plan to strengthen Otto Addo’s squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The Black Stars have had recent success convincing players of Ghanaian descent â including Inaki Williams, Tariq Lamptey, and Antoine Semenyo â to commit to the national team, and Sagoe Jr could be the next name on that list should discussions progress positively.
Currently thriving with Arsenal’s U21s, Sagoe Jr has been one of the standout performers in Premier League 2 this season, contributing three goals and three assists in seven appearances.
His performances have also earned him occasional first-team training opportunities under manager Mikel Arteta, who views the winger as one for the future.
Despite Liberia’s approach, insiders believe the player’s ambitions align more closely with a long-term plan to break into the Ghana or England setup.
