Black Stars coach Otto Addo is on the brink of making history by becoming the first Ghanaian coach to lead the national team to back-to-back FIFA World Cups.
Addo set the record of being the first Ghanaian to play and lead the Black Stars at the global showpiece when he qualified the team to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The German-trained coach led the Black Stars to a play-offs victory against arch-rivals Nigeria to secure a place at Qatar 2022.
Now, the former Borussia Dortmund forwards needs a win against the Central African Republic to at least secure another World Cup berth, depending on the result from Group I's other match between Madagascar and Comoros Island.
Interestingly, Addo has also not lost a game in the World Cup qualifiers since becoming Ghana coach. His record of five wins and three draws puts him up there as one of the coaches with an impeccable run in the qualifiers.
"Yeah, actually, you know, I don't live too much in the past. We have to think about tomorrow, we have to win this game and then we'll see. In a normal scenario, we still need to win the second game as well, or play a draw as well. So, we have to take it game by game, don't think too far. Surely, I'm not thinking too much about myself, it's about the team and we want to win this game tomorrow and then we'll see," he said when asked about how he feels as history beckons.
Despite the turnaround in fortunes after a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations qualifying run, Addo remains under-pressure from fans of the Black Stars, leaving his future in limbo.
