Leicester City manager Marti Cifuentes has shed light on the club’s decision to release winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku for Ghana’s final 2026 World Cup qualifying matches this month.
Issahaku, who has been in outstanding form since returning from a long-term anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, was named in Otto Addo’s squad for the crucial games against the Central African Republic and Comoros.
The 21-year-old winger has made a strong start to the season in the Championship, scoring two goals and providing an assist, reaffirming his growing importance for the Foxes.
For Ghana, his return provides renewed attacking spark; for Leicester, it brings a measure of concern over his fitness after months on the sidelines.
Speaking on the decision, Cifuentes revealed that the player’s determination to represent his country was key to Leicester’s approval.
“We have been speaking with the medical department and the performance department about how Abdul is. There’s an improvement, obviously, every week,” Cifuentes said.
“He wanted to go, that’s the most important thing. There are a couple of important games for them, but he’s definitely looking really good.”
As Ghana aims to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, Cifuentes expressed hope that Issahaku would be carefully managed during the international window.
The Black Stars sit top of Group I and need four points from their final two games against the Central African Republic and Comoros to book a place at next year’s tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
