Leicester City manager Martà Cifuentes has revealed that winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku was determined to join Ghana for their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers this month, despite recent injury concerns.
The 21-year-old, who has been in superb form for the Foxes this season, returned to the Black Stars squad after nearly a year out with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. His recall comes as Ghana prepare to face the Central African Republic and Comoros in their final qualifying fixtures.
Speaking ahead of the international break, Cifuentes praised Issahaku’s progress but called for caution as he continues to build full fitness.
“We’ve been speaking with the medical and performance departments about how Abdul is. There’s improvement every week,” Cifuentes said.
“I would like the Ghana national team to take care of him because he’s still in a period where he hasn’t played many full games. I’m sure they’ll take good care of him â he’s an important player for us, but also for them.”
Cifuentes also revealed Issahaku’s excitement about representing his country again, highlighting the winger’s strong mentality.
“He wanted to go, that’s the most important thing. These are important games for them, and he’s definitely looking really good.”
Issahaku has scored three goals and provided an assist for Leicester City in the Championship this season, playing a key role in their early push for promotion.
Ghana, meanwhile, sit atop Group I and need four points from their remaining two games to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
