The Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT), one of Ghana’s state-owned transport companies, has scaled down its services from 350 nationwide routes to just 80, leaving several communities unserved as it struggles to survive.
The company now operates 115 buses, a sharp decline from the over 1,000 buses in its fleet when it started operations in 2004.
“At the moment, we can boast of only 115 operational buses. Over 180 others are grounded and require servicing, which has severely limited the routes we are able to run,” the Managing Director of MMT, Mr. Cesar Kale, said.
He was speaking during a familiarisation visit to the company by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, in Accra yesterday.
The MD highlighted challenges including financial constraints, low staff morale, and outdated infrastructure, which limit the full operationalisation of the company.
He said as a social intervention company, MMT was unable to increase fares in line with rising costs, unlike private transport operators.
“This policy helps cushion Ghanaians but has also worsened our revenue situation. Salary levels are so low, some allowances do not exist, and many of our staff have gone several years without promotion. Without motivated workers, it is difficult to deliver,” he noted.
Nonetheless, Mr. Kale disclosed that management was working with the Ministry of Finance and stakeholders on a roadmap to acquire new buses and revitalise the company.
“We are poised to reset Metro Mass to a more efficient transport system, in line with government’s transformation agenda,” he assured.
Mr. Kale stressed that MMT remains central to the successful rollout of government’s proposed 24-hour economy and was committed to positioning itself to play that role effectively.
“Transport is key to every transformative economy. Without a reliable transport system, the 24-hour economy is bound to fail and MMT is ready to play its role under the policy for its success,” he said.
The Deputy Minister, Ms. Affo-Toffey, promised to channel her observations and concerns presented by management of MMT to appropriate quarters for redress.
“The President, under the Reset agenda, is committed to the implementation of the 24-hour economy across all sectors and this policy will require MMT to operate round-the-clock services nationwide. Although this may seem challenging, I assure you that the Ministry will provide the necessary support to restore MMT’s reputation as a reliable pillar in our national transportation system,” she stated.
