Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has rallied Ghana’s University for Development Studies (UDS) to âgo and make history’ after their landmark qualification for the final of the FISU World University Football Tournament in Dalian, China.
Her message came after the Tamale-based side edged Spain’s University of Granada 5-4 on penalties on Friday to book a date with defending champions Paulista University of Brazil in Sunday’s decider.
UDS, representing both Ghana and Africa, became the first Ghanaian university to reach the final of a global football competition.
Their semi-final triumph was earned the hard way, with 90 minutes of tense, goalless football before a dramatic shoot-out.
The Ghanaian side converted five of their six spot kicks, while goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo pulled off two superb saves to seal a famous win and send Ghana’s colours flying high.
“Congratulations to UDS,” the Vice President wrote on social media. “Your resilience, teamwork, and fighting spirit have brought pride to Ghana and Africa. One last step to glory! You have made us proud. Now, go make history.”
It is the first time since 2009 that a Ghanaian team has reached the final of a world football event, setting up an historic showdown on September 28 in China.
