
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has refuted claims that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government did not implement the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings.
The Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam MP announced the betting tax as one of the levies set to be abolished during the presentation of the 2025 budget statement on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
However, former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam argued at a press conference shortly after the budget presentation that the tax was never enforced.
Betting tax that they said they have abolished, we never collected betting tax. So to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that you have not implemented, is to deceive the people of Ghana, Amin Adam said.Later that day, during an appearance on JoyNews, Dr. Ato Forson criticized Amin Adam, suggesting that the former finance minister was not well-informed on the matter.I dont think he is on top of that matter because my checks reveal that it was implemented in the second half of 2024.My checks also reveal that year to date, the government of Ghana has collected GH80 million from the betting tax.
