GPL: Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko demand 20 soldiers be stationed at Category A matches
The management teams of Asante Kotoko SC and Accra Hearts of Oak SC have jointly proposed comprehensive reforms to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to address security concerns in the Ghana Premier League. This move follows the tragic death of Francis Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley, who was fatally stabbed on February 2, 2025, during a league match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko. In their proposal dated February 7, 2025, the two clubs highlighted the urgent need for the GFA to take full control of security at all league centres to ensure the safety of fans, players, and property. They also called for strict adherence to Club Licensing Regulations as a way of improving security standards. The proposal outlines key measures, including the immediate implementation of the Gbadegbe Commission report and the deployment of at least 100 police officers for Category A and B matches.Additionally, they recommended deploying 20 military personnel at Category A matches and high-risk games, installing security cameras at all venues, and conducting comprehensive risk assessments to properly categorize matches. The clubs further stressed that security personnel should be sourced from outside the locality of the match venue to prevent conflicts of interest.Matches scheduled at venues that fail to meet security criteria should be relocated, and the Club Licensing Department should introduce new minimum standards for all Ghana Premier League venues.
