The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has called for proactive measures to address issues in the education sector, particularly sponsorship for students and land ownership.
“We need to have a proper way of making sure that these people account for the sacrifice that we have for them. If we don’t, it will affect the younger people coming,” Mr Samuel Atta Mills, the Ranking Member of PAC, noted.
Mr Atta Mills made the remarks on Thursday when he addressed a section of the media in Parliament House, Accra, after the day’s public hearing.
The Ranking Member also highlighted the importance of attention to detail in administrative tasks, citing issues such as delayed salary payments, scholarship recipients not fulfilling obligations, and land ownership disputes.
“When you give someone a scholarship, follow up on it. When you are given a land, make sure you follow up and the land is secured,” he advised.
Despite these challenges, Mr Atta Mills, also the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament, for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem
also acknowledged the achievements of some organizations in managing their surplus, academics, and finances.
He said, “They have done very well with their surplus, academics, and financials. I think it’s about time we give them an applause.”
The Ranking Member’s comments come amid efforts to improve accountability and transparency in the education sector.
