John Mahama
We are living in dangerous times under the second coming of John Mahama.
The people of Ghana, in a very overwhelming verdict on December 7, 2024, and in a surprising move decided to deny the New Patriotic Party (NPP) its plans to ‘break the eight’, and returned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to power.
The end result is what is now known as the ‘super Majority’ and the ‘micro Minority’, with the Supreme Leader being John Mahama. However, this dramatic change has come with dire consequences for a section of the society, especially the appointees of the Akufo-Addo regime.
Prior to being sworn in on January 7, this year, the Mahama administration did not hide its intentions of a vendetta against Akufo-Addo and his men, with the formation of the ill-fated Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), led by one of Jerry Rawlings’ babies with sharp teeth.
The outcome of last year’s general election was like a coup d’état where the normal state order is set aside to enable the new regime to persecute its opponents, regardless of their innocence.
While the Mahama administration did not hesitate to release its members standing trial for various offences, especially causing financial loss to the state, a character called Richard Jakpa, who was discharged from the Ghana Army dishonourably, was let loose on the NPP government’s appointees, first with former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and lately, Ernest Addison, the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
Earlier on, some former officials of the National Service Authority were tried and pronounced guilty for what John Mahama and his team called “loss of state money through the use of ‘ghost’ names”. The two main political parties, NPP and NDC, have been engaged in a kind of “you do me, I do you” game, thus thwarting efforts for a concerted action for nation building.
The situation is worse under the NDC led by John Mahama, more horrifying than under the strong hands of Jerry Rawlings. Now the dismissals of public servants are not limited to the senior ones but junior officers under the excuse that they were appointed after the December 7, 2024 polls.
The situation is more frightening under an Attorney General who understands the nuances of the country’s jurisprudence, and he has been described as one of the finest legal brains. Unfortunately, Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General, does not want to uphold the basic principle in criminal trials that, “the onus of proof lies on the accuser” and also that “one is believed not to be guilty until proven guilty by a competent court of law.”
It is abominable that Dominic Ayine, after holding the crucifix proudly to take the oath of office before the people, can now stoop so low to turn the law upside down. During his presser to present the so-called findings of Okudzeto Ablakwa’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), Dominic Ayine tried some appointees of the previous government and pronounced them guilty.
The only thing he could not do was to sentence them. The learned Attorney General has prejudiced the case, thereby reducing Mahama’s fight against perceived corruption to the level of an inquisition to persecute its opponents. During the run-up to the December 7, 2024 electioneering, candidate Mahama and his men accused the Akufo-Addo government of mismanaging the country, and promised to deal with the perpetrators.
Shortly after taking office, John Mahama was so uncharitable with former President Akufo-Addo, saying he has criminally managed the economy, yet the new administration has been carrying out with its activities without a shutdown of the government machinery. If John Mahama and his team is not aware, we have moved beyond electioneering and now is the time for serious business.
