Some containers at the port
Forty (40) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers which were reported missing have been found at a warehouse belonging to an Indian national at Kpone, in the Greater Accra Region.
Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, who made this known in an interview with TV3, said all the containers have been confiscated and moved to a secured location.
He said, “The important issue is the whereabouts of these containers. The briefing I received this morning indicates that about 40 of them have already been traced to a warehouse in Kpone, which belongs to an Indian national.”
Mr. Jinapor, who commended the efforts of the National Security and law enforcement agencies in locating the missing containers, mentioned that the warehouse owner claimed he bought the containers last year.
The minister hinted that the issue was still under investigation to ensure justice is served, while assuring the public of ongoing work by the security agencies to actively pursue leads to retrieve all the missing containers.
He added that reports of the investigations have further revealed there were more missing containers in other locations.
“This is now a subject of investigation, and the law enforcement agencies will make sure the law takes its course. They have identified other locations and are following up to recover all the containers and ensure the perpetrators are prosecuted before competent courts,” he added.
The Minister of Energy, earlier in the week announced plans by the government to launch a criminal investigation into the missing containers belonging to the ECG.
The development follows an investigative report which revealed that over 1,300 ECG containers meant for clearing at the port went missing, with about 2,341 uncleared containers, although an independent audit found only 1,134 of which about 1,347 could not be accounted for.
The minister also alleged that ECG’s Procurement Directorate has been merged with its Housing and Estate Unit, adding that the Director of Procurement had no prior experience in procurement and was not a member of any professional procurement body.
