Nine days after making his Black Stars debut, Lawrence Agyekum scored a goal and created another as Cercle Brugge shared the spoils with Kortrijk in the Belgium Relegation round 1 game.
Agyekum received a late call-up to join the Black Stars after Elisha Owusu picked up an injury.
The former RB Salzburg lad got what he later described as his “dream” moment when he entered the fray in the 83rd minute of Ghana’s 5-0 drubbing of Chad.
Although the game and points had been secured before his introduction, Agyekum enjoyed an eight-minute came on the pitch as Ghana strolled to a comfortable victory.
His debut seems to have done his confidence a world of good despite being an unused substitute in Ghana’s second and final game against Madagascar (a 3-0 win).
In his first game back from the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Agyekum showcased his immense potential in Cercle Brugge’s relegation round 1 tie against Kortrijk.
Despite going behind after 14 minutes and trailing the host after Bram Lagae’s sublime finish at the interval, the 21-year-old midfielder levelled the game six minutes before the hour.
10 minutes to the end of the game, Agyekum looked to have teed up Thibo Somers for the winner until Abdelkahar Kadri equalised at the death.
In between Kadri’s leveller and the final whistle was a moment to forget for Agyekum’s countryman Francis Abu.
After taking Agyekum’s place in the 87th minute, two quick cautions saw him ushered down the tunnel.
His dismissal added to what was becoming an increasingly physical encounter after Bram Lagae was sent off in the first half.
The tempestuous tie ended with a point apiece for both teams, who are battling to preserve their top flight status in the Belgian League.
