The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially conceded defeat in the December 7, 2024 elections.
According to him, the NPP’s internal collation of results confirmed a decisive victory for former President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In his concession speech yesterday, Dr. Bawumia, however, assured his party’s members that the NPP would regroup and come back stronger.
He emphasised that the NPP’s journey was far from over, urging supporters to remain hopeful.
“We may have lost the battle, but not the war,” he noted, stressing, “I assure you that we will regroup and come back even stronger.”
Dr. Bawumia added, “We will take stock of events and pick lessons to guide us going forward. In the interim, I urge you all to look into the future with optimism and hope.”
Acknowledging the pain and disappointment among party faithful, the NPP flagbearer reassured them that their sacrifices and efforts would not be in vain.
“I know the feeling hurts, given that this is not the result you worked for; I know you would feel there is darkness ahead, and that is natural, especially when, in all sincerity, you gave the assignment your all,” he said, but encouraged them to see the defeat as part of the democratic process, intimating that they would learn, adapt, and rise again.
He praised the campaign team and party members for their dedication, noting that the NPP had laid a strong foundation with bold policy proposals.
He expressed his gratitude to Ghanaians for their participation in the democratic process and acknowledged their choice for change.
“The people of Ghana have spoken. The people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia revealed that he had already called Mr. Mahama to congratulate him on his victory, and pledged his support for a smooth transition.
He emphasised the importance of peace and democracy in the country, saying, “I am making this concession speech before the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country.”
Opposition with Purpose
The Vice President also promised that the NPP would not be a disruptive opposition but would hold the new government accountable in a manner that advances the country’s democracy.
“Our MPs, I am convinced, will do a thorough job to ensure that the citizenry gets the best out of the democratic dispensation,” he added.
He also assured President-Elect Mahama of the NPP’s full support during the transition process, underscoring the importance of unity and collaboration for Ghana’s progress.
Gratitude and Vision
Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to key figures in his political journey, including President Nana Akufo-Addo, the First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, his wife Samira Bawumia, and his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
He also thanked Ghanaians, especially NPP supporters, for their trust and confidence.
“We put our best foot forward in the contest, explaining our policies and programmes,” he said. “While this was not our desired outcome, it is part of the democratic process, and we respect it with all humility,” he intimated.
