Ghana’s agenda to promote industrial skills and reduce importation has received major support throught a strategic collaboration between SIGMA appliances and government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative.
This partnership aims to bridge the country’s skills gap while reducing dependence on imported electrical appliances.
Speaking to B&FT at the inaugural Platinum Dealers Day and partnership’s launch in Accra, the Director General-Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service, Eng. Dr. Eric Kofi Adzroe, stressed that Ghana’s development can be achieved by empowering the youth with practical, market-ready skills.
“The only way we can transform this country is through skilling-up the young people and TVET is at the forefront of implementing government policy in that direction,” he noted.
He further explained that under the partnership SIGMA will put up a local production plant for electrical home appliances such as irons, fridges, air-conditioners etc.
“Not only that, SIGMA will also set up a Technical Institute within the factory premises. Dubbed Royal TVET, it will put together classroom training with direct industry experience – which will prepare graduates for work,” he added.
Eng. Adzore underscored the partnership’s importance, saying it will address two critical national needs and thus reduce Ghana’s heavy reliance on imported appliances while building skilled workers to serve both SIGMA and the industry as a whole.
This development will also encourage notable technology transfer, as SIGMA engineers will be training young Ghanaians on the latest systems and production processes.
On government’s commitment to ensure sustainability, he said the country is ready to provide existing TVET institutions to align with SIGMA’s training needs while urging other industries to emulate SIGMA’s efforts by merging manufacturing with skills development.
General Manager -Platinum Impex – the distributor of SIGMA appliances – Ahmad Taan also stressed the importance of building effective partnerships to promote sustainable development.
“This collaboration will not only bridge the skills gap Ghana is experiencing. It will also give young people the tools to drive Ghana’s economic transformation,” he said.
