
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has announced a major breakthrough in its fight against violent crime after a deadly shootout with suspected armed robbery gang responsible for multiple attacks on miners, motorists, and even a bank in the region.
At a press briefing on Monday, April 14, the regional police commander, ACP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, revealed that the gang led by suspects Sampson alias Sammy Tugah and W.K. an ex-convict from Old Edubiase had terrorized residents in Fomena, Dompoase, and surrounding areas for months.
The gang’s criminal activities included attacks on miners & Chinese nationals between Agogoso and Adukwai, shooting sporadically and injuring a Chinese national, on February 15, 2025. They escaped with gold concentrate worth GH¢150,000.
Again, on February 16, 2025, six masked robbers attacked a mining site at Dinkyei, engaging police in a shootout. An officer was shot, and the robbers stole his AK-47 rifle before fleeing with GH¢200,000 worth of gold.
Then, on March 24, 2025, four armed men attacked a Nissan Navara carrying Chinese miners, riddling the vehicle with bullets and injuring two.
On April 5, 2025, robbers blocked the Adansi Denkyea road with firewood, ambushing a Toyota Corolla. Two small-scale miners were shot and robbed of 6 pounds of gold worth GH¢80,000.
On April 11, 2025, the gang attacked seven vehicles between Akrokerri and Anwiankwanta, robbing passengers and shooting four.
On April 10, 2025, five robbers scaled the fence of Adansi Rural Bank, Fomena, tied up the security guard, and used an electric cutter to break into the vault. They stole an unspecified amount of cash and two pump-action guns.
Police Shootout & Gang’s Downfall
The gang’s reign ended on April 12, 2025, when police tracked them to Sanfo Aduam. Acting on intelligence, officers intercepted the suspects in a KIA Picanto taxi with registration number WR 650-17.
A fierce gun battle ensued, resulting in the deaths of four suspects, including Sampson and W.K.
One suspect, according to the police, survived and is under police guard at Bekwai Government Hospital.
The police retrieved an AK-47 rifle, stolen from police in February, two pump-action guns taken from the bank robbery, live ammunition, and spent cartridges.
Police Assurance & Call for Public Support
ACP Nyaaba commended the Regional Intelligence and Anti-Robbery teams for their efforts and assured the public of continued security.
“We urge citizens to report suspicious activities to aid our fight against crime. The Ghana Police Service, under IGP Tetteh Yohuno, remains committed to ensuring safety,” he stated.
With the gang neutralized, residents in Adansi and surrounding areas can breathe a sigh of relief.
However, police investigations continue as they pursue possible accomplices.
