The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Ghana Police Service for the latest arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
The suspect, Daniel Owuusu Koranteng aka Amakye, was arraigned on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, but the Madina District Court remanded him in police custody to reappear on April 1, 2025.
The GJA in statement released on March 20 said it has been in touch with senior police officers to get details of the arrest and prosecution of the suspect.
“We particularly commend highly the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor for this giant step towards unraveling the barbaric murder of the investigative journalist.
“We note that more than six years after the assassination of Ahmed Suale on January 16, 2019, this is the first time the Police have made significant impact in respect of bringing the suspected killers of the investigative journalist to face justice,” the statement said.
The GJA noted that the arrest and prosecution of the suspect come on the back of persistent and relentless demand by the GJA.
The Association urged the Police not to relent in their effort to rein in other suspects.
“We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of Suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad, who have remained shocked by his murder,” the statement added.
The death of Ahmed Suale and the failure of the Police to find his killers have been a major drawback to Ghana’s World Press Freedom Index over the past six years, and in keeping to our resolve to get to the bottom of this case, the GJA is keenly following the current developments.
GJA has since recalled its ultimatum to take the Ahmed Suale Case to the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice after the end of March 2025, if no concrete action is taken by the Police to find and prosecute Suale’s killers.
“In the coming days, we shall be engaging with the Police leadership for more details about the prosecution of the suspect and further investigations into the murder case, after which we shall update the public on our intended march to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.
“We shall also demand from the Police updates on investigations into the many cases of assault against journalists that have gone cold, including Latif Iddrisu’s case which we had also earmarked for presentation to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice,” GJA said.
Meanwhile, the GJA has informed its international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), about the arrest and prosecution of suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng.
The FAJ and IFJ have also indicated their resolve to take the Ahmed Suale Case to other international forums to seek justice for the murdered investigative journalist.
