Economic policy analyst Senyo Hosi has urged Ghanaians to acknowledge the country’s economic difficulties and contribute meaningfully to its recovery.
Speaking on The Key Points with Alfred Ocansey, he stated that both political parties and citizens must play their roles in addressing the nation’s economic challenges.
He stressed the need for practical proposals rather than political blame games, adding, “When we are talking, we should be proposing and debating ideas, counter proposals on how to turn things around.”
Hosi also criticized the tendency of Ghanaians to evade taxes while expecting government services.
“Ghanaians want government to do everything for them, and when it’s time for us to pay our taxes, we are all finding ways to go around the system,” he lamented on March 15.
He called for a shift in national mindset: “We talk, we talk, we don’t do. Let’s be proper citizens…not spectators, not talkers.”
Touching on the national debt, Senyo Hosi raised concerns about the lack of full transparency regarding the details of government debt.
“We always speak about the public debt in our budget. We never speak about the general government debt in our budget,” he noted.
“When you talk about your general government debt, that’s when you bring in COCOBOD, ECG, which are critical features in the assessment IMF will use,” he emphasized.
Hosi believes that failing to present the full debt picture weakens transparency and affects Ghana’s financial credibility.
He urged the government to ensure greater visibility in its financial reporting.
Mr Hosi also expressed dissatisfaction with the structure of Ghana’s Electronic Levy (E-Levy), arguing that it should have been redesigned for better tax accountability instead of being scrapped.
“E-Levy should have been redesigned,” he stated.
Hosi explained that an effective tax system should reward those who regularly file their taxes while widening the net for those who evade it.
He further called for a punitive tax system to encourage compliance, stating, “This is about incentivizing good behavior. If not, government generates revenue unfairly.”
