Students of the Accra Girls’ Senior High School have been educated about prospects in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector; and encouraged to pursue careers in that field.
The students were educated during an event organised by WiWASH, a Network of Professional Women in the WASH sector in Ghana as parts of activities marking International Women’s Day 2025 under theme ‘Accelerating Action through Guidance’.
The event, which took place at the Accra Girls’ Senior High School campus on March 7, 2025, brought together over 300 students, teachers and WASH professionals.
Experts in Water Quality Assurance, Water Distribution Engineering, Geo-Spatial Technology and Quantity Surveying took turns to educate the school children about the rudiments of their professional fields and showed them the pathways to becoming professionals in those fields as well.
In an address, President of WiWASH, Faustina Boachie, explained that the goal for the event was to introduce young girls to career opportunities in the WASH sector and inspire them to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics-related careers.
Mrs. Boachie said that although there are prospects for non-science related professionals such as lawyers, communication experts, marketers and human resource management professionals, there is a need to focus attention on STEM careers as the number of women in that field are fewer than expected. “That is why WiWASH is happy to mentor and guide young girls on educational pathways leading to careers in STEM fields,” she said.
Apart from formal education, the WiWASH President also encouraged the school children to build their capacities by attending seminars, do research and network with professionals. “The world needs fresh ideas from young individuals like you to solve problems,” Mrs. Boachie said.
In her address, Gifty Andoh, Headmistress of the School, indicated that although the day’s event had centred on technical educational courses, every subject area being taught at the school was very important.
She urged the girls to be curious, pursue excellence and be assertive. Other dignitaries at the event included the President of the Accra Girls’ Old Students’ Association – Professor A. Kastner, executives of WiWASH and some teachers of the school.
