The Central Regional Minister, Okyere Panyin, has announced an award scheme for communities that promote sanitation and hygiene.
This, according to him, is a sustainable measure for eradicating hygiene and sanitation related diseases.
Under the award scheme, communities that are able to maintain high standards of hygiene and sanitation, according to the Minister, will be rewarded with developmental projects.
The Mr Panyin made the announcement when he visited the Assin North District to mark Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebration.
“Now in Central Region, we are dealing with diseases due to lack of proper sanitation and so we are saying that we are going to reward communities that will help in dealing with sanitation issues,” said the Minister.
The reward, according to him, will be “in the form of developmental projects”.
He has therefore called on traditional authorities and all other stakeholders to help in promoting sanitation and hygiene in the region.
Since last year October, the Central Region has been plagued with the outbreak of cholera which has led to nearly 20 deaths.
