Southampton forward Kamaldeen Sulemana says he’s looking forward to scoring more after he broke his Premier League goal-scoring duck on Saturday, bringing an end to a two-season spell without a goal in the English top flight.
Moving in-between the Premier League and Championship in the past two seasons, Southampton have struggled for consistency, which in turn has led to the Ghanaian’s lengthy dry spell.
However, Sulemana was in full flow at St Mary’s: direct, sharp, caused havoc and proved to be a handful for Bournemouth’s defence with his pace and trickery.
His persistent probing was rewarded in the 72nd minute as his nimble-feet saw him drill a low drive into the corner with his left foot.
The goal marked his first since scoring a brace against Liverpool on the final day of the 2022/23 Premier League season.
Reacting to the goal, Sulemana – who has two goal involvements already in the FA Cup this term – said:
“This is my first Premier League goal in two years. I’m glad that the goal came and hopefully I can add more to the team. The coach has given me confidence, not just the coach but the players who trust in me and try to find me when they come on the pitch.
“I think I try to live up to their expectations and try to do my best for the team because when they rely on you in a certain moment, you’ve got to come up and show that you can handle whatever you’re supposed to do for the team,” he added.
Southampton are at the foot of the Premier League table and battling for survival, with the inevitability of relegation bearing down their throat.
