The Acting Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, has stated that he will not make any comments on the ongoing investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) regarding alleged corruption offences at his outfit involving his predecessor.
He cited the need for due process and fairness in such matters.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the OSP noted that an alleged embezzlement of a GHC1.3billion from the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF) at the NPA is currently under investigation.
He said the allegation involves the former Chief Executive Officer of NPA, Mustapha Abdul Hamid and 3 others. The three other individuals included in the investigation are; the Coordinator of the UPPF, Mr. Jacob Amoah, NPA staff, Freda Acheampong and another staff, Wendy Ashong Newman.
Speaking on the matter on the KeyPoints with Alfred Ocansey on February 15, Mr. Tameklo, who has been in office for only two weeks, indicated that he is still reviewing records and noted that the investigation in question begun before his appointment.
He expressed concerns about making premature statements that could be perceived as prejudicial.
“I will permit the SP to continue with the investigation and not make any comment for the time being that may be considered prejudicial, because some of these correspondences will be coming to me, and it is only right that you give people the benefit of a fair hearing,” he explained.
He further noted the importance of maintaining objectivity, as he could potentially be invited by the SP to make a statement.
Drawing from legal experience, he cited an example from the Dr. Opuni case, where a witness altered their statements between investigations by different agencies, leading to scrutiny during cross-examination.
“I don’t want to be put in that situation. So for now, I wouldn’t go so much into it. But the SP says they are investigating the matter, and I’ll leave him to exercise his statutory powers of investigation. Whatever the outcome of the investigation will be, I strongly believe that it will be put before the public,” he stated.
Mr. Tameklo reaffirmed his commitment to upholding due process and ensuring that legal frameworks are adhered to in addressing the case.
He emphasized the importance of allowing the Special Prosecutor to conduct investigations without interference or external influence, ensuring that all necessary legal procedures are followed.
