Renowned lawyer Thaddeus Sory has taken a firm stance against the Special Prosecutor (SP), Kissi Agyebeng, over his handling of the Ken Ofori-Atta investigation, accusing him of wasting time on media theatrics instead of focusing on legal action.
Sory’s criticism follows the February 11, 2025, raid on the former Finance Minister’s residence, allegedly carried out by state security operatives. The next day, Agyebeng held a press conference denying involvement in the raid, yet went ahead to declare Ofori-Atta a fugitive of justice despite his lawyers informing the OSP that he was on medical leave in the U.S.
In a post on his Facebook page, Thaddeus Sory condemned the SP’s approach, emphasizing that Ghanaian law allows for trials in absentia and that there was no need for unnecessary public declarations.
“If you believe you have enough evidence to prosecute him, then proceed. The law allows for trials in absentia. That is what we expect—not storytelling. Instead, you have wasted valuable time and public resources on grandstanding and unnecessary announcements. You have, in effect, caused financial loss to the Republic by spending work hours beating the ‘gong gong’ instead of doing the job.”
Sory further questioned why the Special Prosecutor chose to hold a press conference instead of taking legal action. He pointed out that if Agyebeng was indeed searching for Ofori-Atta, he should focus on executing search and arrest warrants instead of media engagements.
“You announced to the world that you were ‘looking for’ the former Minister. Why? If you are looking for him, then find him. That is your job. We don’t need updates—we need results.”
He also mocked the Special Prosecutor’s “hypocritical apology”, describing it as unnecessary since the OSP had already denied responsibility for the raid.
“Why apologise when you were not responsible for the entry? Did the Minister accuse you? Or was this fear? Or an attempt to court his friendship while publicly pretending to be searching for him?”
Sory further urged the OSP to adhere to due process and work with Ofori-Atta’s lawyers instead of creating public drama. He advised that if there was sufficient evidence for prosecution, the OSP should proceed with trial in absentia rather than using the courts as an excuse for inaction.
The lawyer’s remarks add to growing concerns about whether the Special Prosecutor’s approach is genuinely about justice or political grandstanding.
