The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has discontinued the prosecution of media personality, Animwaa Anim-Addo, who was accused of defrauding his predecessor, Godfred Yeboah Dame of $50,000.
The decision was announced on Tuesday at the High Court in Accra, where Assistant State Attorney, Maame Afua Osei-Gyamerah, informed the court of the Attorney-General’s directive.
Animwaa Anim-Addo, who was absent from court, had faced charges of defrauding by false pretence and making conflicting grants of the same land to multiple parties.
“My Lady, on the instructions of the Attorney-General and pursuant to Sections 59(1), 59(2)(B)(1) and 59(5) of Act 30, it is my humble prayer that the charges be withdrawn,” ASA Osei-Gyamerah submitted to the court.
Justice Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie granted the request, officially dismissing the charges against the accused.
Background of the Case
Animwaa Anim-Addo was accused of deceiving former Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, into giving her $50,000 in September 2021.
She allegedly claimed the money was for a life-saving spinal surgery in India and offered a piece of land in East Legon as security.
Mr. Dame, who had known Anim-Addo for three years due to her media and public relations work, granted her request based on her urgent pleas and assurances of repayment within two months.
However, upon returning from a trip abroad, he found Anim-Addo hosting a radio show. She later claimed she had undergone surgery and returned to work, but investigations revealed she had not traveled or undergone any medical procedure.
Further inquiries exposed that Anim-Addo had sold the same land she used as security to an Estate Developer, Cod Company Ltd, for US$30,000 in April 2022 – months after securing funds from Mr. Dame.
Despite partial refunds totaling $5,000 Anim-Addo still owed $45,000 to the former Attorney-General.
Bench Warrant Issued and Later Dropped
At an earlier stage of the trial, the court issued a bench warrant for Anim-Addo’s arrest, after she failed to appear. The case was initially adjourned to January 21, 2025 for further proceedings.
However, with the Attorney-General’s decision to discontinue the case, all legal actions against Animwaa Anim-Addo have now been halted.
