Accra Hearts of Oak climaxed the weekend’s Ghana Premier League round of games with a 2-0 win over Bechem United to move out of the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, their sworn rivals Asante Kotoko struggled against newly promoted side Young Apostles at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium, earning a point after going down early.
3Sports delves into the talking points from this weekend’s round of fixtures.
Kotoko drop first points of the season
Asante Kotoko – who did not play in the league last weekend due to their opponents, Nsoatreman, being involved in continental duties – dropped two points on their return to the Ghana Premier League on Sunday at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.
Asante Kotoko were among the teams affected by the nationwide shutdown of stadia as the National Sports Authority (NSA) races against time to provide an approved facility for the Black Stars’ 2025 AFCON qualifying home game against Sudan in October.
Kotoko managed to strike in the 79th minute courtesy of Emmanuel Antwi after going down in the 51st minute.
Ultimately, the Porcupine Warriors shared the spoils with Young Apostles on head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum’s 70th league game.
Rainbow glitters in Legon
A colourful display from Hearts of Oak at their newly found home ground, University of Ghana Stadium, as they beat Bechem United 2-0 on Sunday night.
Ransford Mensah got the Phobians off the mark this term with a well-placed free-kick six minutes into the second half before Hamza Issah extended his goalscoring run – the most of any player under Aboubakar Ouattara to eight – with a glancing header.
After losing their first two games against Basake Holy Stars and Heart of Lions, Hearts of Oak bagged their first points of the season, keeping their fifth clean sheet under pressure saddled Ouattara in the process.
Nations FC win first-ever game in Dormaa
Nations FC won their first-ever game in Dormaa as they beat home side Aduana 2-1 on Sunday.
After previously losing out on their first visit to Dormaa 1-0, Nations were set out to prove a point, breaking the hearts of the hosts in the dying embers of the game.
Young Apostles score first top-flight goal
Despite picking up their first-ever top-flight point in last week’s 0-0 draw away at Nations FC, Young Apostles were yet to get off the mark in the league.
However, against Asante Kotoko on Sunday, Daniel Lomotey put Young Apostles ahead before Kotoko equalised to deny the visitors maximum points.
The Division One Zone One champions will look to leverage this to get their 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season up and running.
Ezekiel Alladoh spares Accra Lions’ blushes
Accra Lions were on course to record their third successive loss of the season against Karela United on Sunday until Ezekiel Alladoh restored parity for the visitors.
Lions, who finished as runners-up last season, have struggled this term, picking up one point out of a possible nine so far.
Before the season, the Accra-based side were tipped to be amongst the title contenders but have struggled so far and find themselves at the bottom of the League after three games.
